5 Ways to Find Hidden Time to Knit

Trying to improve knitting speed doesn’t equal more completed projects. Even the speediest knitters will tell you that if you never knit, you will never make progress on your knitting. The true key to producing more knitting faster is simply knitting more.

Even if you think you don’t have any time to knit, I promise you that you can find at least 5 extra minutes. Time is somewhat subjective. You can find time to do anything- it’s a matter of prioritizing it over productivity suckers.

Why would you want to find more time to knit? Besides the obvious reasons like knitting gifts in time for Christmas and being able to knit your wardrobe, there are several health benefits to knitting. Knitting can decrease blood pressure, aid in depression and anxiety, and quitting addictions. You can even count it as self-care! If you want to start knitting more, here are 5 quick tips:

Throw a project in your purse ( in a Ziploc bag or GoKnit Pouch) and knit where ever you go. On the subway? Knit. In the car? Knit. At a boring meeting? Knit and say it helps you focus! Even if you get only a few rows done, it all adds up.

Knitting without looking will allow you to knit WHENEVER (unless you’re driving. please, don’t knit while driving).

As Elizabeth Zimmerman says “What? You can’t knit in the dark? Stuff and nonsense; anybody can. Shut your eyes. Knit one stitch. Open your eyes and look at the stitch; it’s all right. Shut your eyes and knit two stitches. Open them. Shut them. Knit three stitches. Falling off a log is no comparison.”

Practice this all the time, and soon, you won’t even need to look for simple lace patterns!

Save the 2 color brioche cabled hat for relaxing at home. When you’re knitting on the go, simpler knitting is easier to carry around and knit without looking. This could mean socks, a sweater with a simple stitch, a simple hat, or hexipuffs

Knitting is pretty easy to quickly pick up and down. Leave it near you when cooking and bang out a row while waiting for the water to boil. Grab it while the commercials are going when watching TV. If you’re sitting around waiting, you could be knitting.

Is this an excuse to knit or an excuse to watch TV…. the world may never know. You don’t have to stop watching TV to knit- do them at the same time! In an episode of Girl Boss, you can finish the edging on a hat or sweater. In an episode of friends? Half a hand warmer if you knit fast.

Everyone has time to knit. It’s a matter of seeing those hidden cracks of time, the moments of inspiration to interweave the fibers of passion into another finished project.

  1. i knit while stuck in traffic. a few sts while
    crawling along really does
work! and being stopped isn’t half as painful!!😉

  2. This post made me smile! The only place I don’t take my knitting is to church. In fact, last evening, my husband and I had a burger in a casual and dimly lit restaurant. Turned a heel on my sock, I did! About knitting in front of the TV? I have a hat on my project page that I named ‘Later’ because it was knit during an episode of ‘Later with Jules Holland’!
Have a blessed day and keep knitting.
