What I’m Knitting And Reading This Month: January 2018

I’m so excited to show you what I’m knitting, reading, and watching this month! I rarely do WIP and FO recaps, so I’ve decided to make it a monthly affair. I’m not the fastest of knitters as well as quite busy,  so I think finishing 1-2 projects a month is (almost) manageable for me.

Over the new year, I’ve decided to have a max of two projects on the needles. Both of these projects use skills that are new to me, so the majority of them are simple knitting with a bit of flair thrown in.

1. The Samurai Socks

Last month I started reading the book “Knitted Socks East to West” and I spotted these wonderful cable and seed stitch socks. I’ve modified them to have only one pattern repeat instead of two. I also changed the heel to a strong heel, and I’m knitting them two-at-a-time on magic loop. I also plan on doing the regular toe to try my hand at grafting. I’m playing a bit of yarn chicken with the remaining 24 g I have for the foot… I hope I make it!

I’ve made more progress than this in the last few days, and have already turned the heel.

2. Nurmilintu Shawl

This shawl is BEAUTIFUL, and I love the ferns (or are they birds?) that the garter stitch lace pattern forms. Because of the garter stitch breaks, it’s been quite easy to knit despite one mistake that required a lifeline. I’ve finally finished the first lace section and it’s so pretty! Even my non-knitter mom raved about the beautiful yarn I am knitting it in- I’m using Lorna’s Laces Nearly Solids in Waistcoat. I’m playing yarn chicken with this one too- I’m using stash yarn for both the socks and the shawl.

Fixing mistakes at night does prove to be a challenge.

What I’m Reading

Last year I got a Kindle Paperwhite which allows me to knit and read at the same time! I’ve just started reading The Designer which is a free book if you have Kindle Unlimited. In other news, I just found a new podcast that I’m beyond n love with called Knit FM. It’s so, so, so good. I’ve also been loving the Victoria TV show on Amazon Prime Video.

This post is a part of the GSHeller Yarn Along. Check it out below!

I’m looking for some new books, TV shows, and podcasts to entertain me while I knit. It would be greatly appreciated if you let me know your favorites in the comments below.

  1. Do you like knitting mysteries? Maggie Sefton’s are my favorites. Just discovered your blog and have been enjoying reading it. I started my TKGA MHK level 1 in February. Beautiful pictures, btw!
